Outdoor Portraits
The edge of glory.
I've
seen a lot of outdoor portraits to last a lifetime, but if it doesn't
give me the feeling of awe and wonder then I think it's not much. There
are a lot of commercial portraiture's published daily, those heavily
saturated photos with surreal looks, of models wearing sundresses in the
outdoor, they are really good in their own sense, but if it not as
daring a defying gravity with levitation, jump shots, or of models being
shot underwater then they are just as good but without eliciting awe.

Mt Guiting Guiting
San Fernando - Magdiwang Traverse
Recently I've been trying to think of ways to present my blog and I've been very busy with climbing mountains for the most part. This blog is supposed to be for travel and photography so I cannot just limit my blog post to hiking adventures. This would be my first blog post using videos I took during my adventures in Sibuyan Island. I am trying to improve on my video editing skills, as an amateur using GoPro and this is my first work. Please watch in HD to better appreciate.

NORTH COTABATO | Cold Mornings In Lake Venado
The Enchanted 2nd Highest Lake In The Philippines
Kim and I were actually taking each other's photo, marveling at the clear reflection we have in the lake. Joanne is trying to warm up with a little walk. The saturated greens and blues of the photo were no exaggeration; I don't over enhance my photographs.
Enchanted and Beautiful, this Endorheic Lake near the summit of Mt Apo is the Philippines 2nd Highest Lake in elevation. It's not surprising since Mt Apo dubbed as "The Grandfather of Philippine Mountains" is the country's roof top. We camped here after a daylong of trekking the forested Boholanon trail of Magpet, and here's an account of what happened when we arrived and waking up near a sublime body of water with the facade of Mt Apo's many summits looming before it.

My December Moon
A Year End Love Affair
A flitting image in the night sky, peaking through grey clouds, taunting, giving light and taking it back, seeking redemption, a chance to inspire, a moonlight in a polluted Manila sky, these are but a few fleeting thoughts I had in me while I stared at the moon on a chance night of weekend before Christmas.

KALINGA | The Harsh Road To Lubo
Keeping The Camaraderie Alive
"Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen"
- Benjamin Disraeli
I am sharing some of the landscape photos taken along the road, hand held photos shot with the noontime sky rendering the landscape flat. Cramped as we were with our conditions in the truck, and getting the trip held up as it is every hour as the truck hits the bumps along the road, the scenery kept us happy and the presence of comrades holding on makes us want to move forward in making this trip remarkable.

KALINGA | A Day Spent At Lubo Part I
A Sykes Outdoor Tsinelas Ni Juan Outreach
Overlooking a valley with a pristine river running in between. Lubo village is that cluster of houses in the rice terraces.
It was easily the longest weekend of my life, well one if
those anyway considering the number of hours spent traveling to reach
this place, not only that, what we went through can be spelled in epic
proportions that a simple blog post may not be enough.

Adventure Trek With Sykes Outdoor

The sun on our backs, our shadows pooled in our feet, it was hot, and it was humid, steep trails, thick bushes, high cliffs, cherry blossoms, bamboo shoots and silent river springs, all in a day’s trek to Mt Manalmon. Lugging our day packs with packed lunches of takeout meals from Jollibee and a happy disposition, it was yet another day of adventure and learning about the outdoors.

BENGUET | Fire Mummies Of The Philippines
The Pride And Rich Cultural Heritage Of The Ibaloi's
Photo was taken at the home of our guide in Mt Timbak.
We registered before we were escorted to the burial sites of the mummies, the
house has a very nice view of the Mountains before it, including Mt Pulag, and this dirty kitchen was homey with charm
akin to it.

MOUNTAIN | Of Godly Rays And Rain That Never Came
Inspired By Trekking Mt Gulogod Baboy
Its my romance to the mountain, of the trails in open fields, in high blade grass, in cows poo everywhere, of kids running up and down the slope, of idle houses serving as rest stops, of coconuts and tamarinds, of citrus bushes and scavenging wild guava fruits, of the humid and then the cold air fanning me, fanning us. There was not a moment to reflect when you are running out of breath. Dark clouds looming ahead of us, and I fear for rain to come down, when all I have is a cheap summer tent I just bought. This mountain, these hills, a trail used one too often.

AURORA | Trekking Ditumabo Mother Falls
Aurora's Enchanting Mother Of All Falls
The mother of all Aurora's Falls. Certainly a well deserved name by just looking at that 140 feet drop. Luckily, I get to take on this trip on a cloudy day. Aurora province is like a lush garden, and trekking the 1.3 km from the Aurora Mini Hydro Plant was like a dream walk in a forested park.

AURORA | Balete Park
Enchanted And Gargantuan

Placed in an enclosure, much like a park. This tree is so big I have to get far away, much far If I intend to place the tree in the entire frame of a picture. This photo is already is a long shot but still I only got half of it in the frame.

Sagada | Splash From The Big Falls
SAGADA | Splash From The Big Falls
The Long Trekking And The Big Reward
" Buwis Buhay" or death defying, the term Pinoy's love to use when they do something that pushes them to their limit. The long trekk along the Aguid Rice Terraces just to get here in the Bomod-ok Falls (Big Falls) of Sagada is tiresome, being in an open rice field expose to the sun. It's no wonder people would call this "Buwis Buhay, likened if you have been missing on cardio exercises as this would likely burn all the calories taken at breakfast prior to trekking. The big reward awaits, and while I push myself, struggling along with my water bottle and heavy camera to witness this wall of cascading natural wonder, I relent while taking a lung full of the freshest Sagada air.

Sagada | Trekking Echo Valley
SAGADA | Trekking Echo Valley
A Church, A Cemetery, A Valley Of Pines And Hanging Coffins
As part of a day tour, this is more of exploring Sagada's cultural heritage. Being that this trail is very near the centro of the town, Trekking Echo Valley starts by visiting the small church that looked more like one of those american county churches, very much charming and quaint. The church looks at home as framed by huge Pine Trees and unique architectural design.

Sagada | In Search Of A Beautiful Sunrise
SAGADA | In Search Of A Beautiful Sunrise
A Cold Morning, A Viewpoint And A Foggy Sunrise

It looks like a gateway to heaven, seeing the fog covers and envelopes the pine trees, marking their silhouette even from a distance. It certainly looked divine, making it one of the reasons why I wanted to visit Sagada again. The rugged terrain, the sweet smell of old pines, marvelous cave system, and a weather that's perfect for communing with nature, these makes Sagada to be just the right place to escape the searing heat of Summer in the Philippines.

SAGADA | The Road And Magnificent Caves
May 20, 2012
I'm back in Baguio City, and though I can still smell the Pines and fresh air, its quite different from the purity of the Sagada Environment. It was a 2nd time for me, but still lot's of things that are new. Because I was already familiar with the route we took, the delights of passing through the highest highways in Benguet and the roadside beauty of Mountain Province is incredible. I left the bus window open, never mind that I'm wearing a white jacket, and even though the place is spurned by a cool weather, my face, hair and my jacket is caking with dust when we arrived in Sagada. I was up for the adventure, never even felt tired though I'm lugging a 40 liter back pack.
The road was unforgiving, bus ride is 6 hours from Baguio to Sagada, Mountain Province with only 2 bus stops in between. I learned lesson not to drink much water. Because of the cold weather, I tend to have the urge to pee more often than not, and it's getting me in much trouble because I had to wait for the next bus stop to answer the call of nature. So on my way back, just a few sips of water made it through. I'd certainly recommend drinking less water on trips like these, unless you're on a tour and and could get off anywhere in the road.
The plan supposedly was for few of my friends to take on this trip, I was not intentionally planning this out. Being a travel blogger, I'd like to cover new places, and I've already blogged about Sagada, in fact this place is one of the first location I've written a travel post on. But my friends imposed it on me, intent on joining my tours, I agreed, only to have watch them bail out one by one. I am not one to cancel trips, especially if I've anticipated it, made arrangements and especially announce it to a few of my faithful readers. I'd still go out, just on my own, but luckily my travel buddy is joining, then a few other friends that I know would never bail on the opportunity. I manage to pull through, all five of us, and the first thing we did was of course spelunking, Lumiang - Sumaging Cave Connection, straight 6 hours.
A challenge that was, I felt like a balloon getting stretch to my limit, as there are places where I had to stretch my legs to reach on rock crevices, or had to shrink as small as I can to crawl in holes. To stop feeling cold, I swan in a cave pool that's way below freezing until I feel numb and close to septicemia. At the end of the 2 days and 2 nights excursion, armed with over a thousand landscape, macro and portrait photos, including the overcoming the challenge of photographing indoor cave systems, marvelous sunrise, nature trekking in rice terraces, the big falls, echo valley, and the rain swept freshwater lake. I still want more, and I vow to go back here as soon as I can.
Travel Notes features my thoughts while on the road. It's a mirror of my
current state of mind, impressions of the places I go through, these
are snippets of my first hand experiences while traveling.
