Baguio | Old Diplomat Hotel, Shadows and Shades Lurking

BAGUIO | Diplomat Hotel, Shadows And Shades Lurking
Haunted Photographic Haven

Joey, my travel companion just stepped out for a few minutes, says that he feels the place to be a bit confining. Just so for me, I found a good subject standing just outside the door.

PHOTOGRAPHY | Mt Timbak, Benguet
Outdoor Portraits

The edge of glory.

I've seen a lot of outdoor portraits to last a lifetime, but if it doesn't give me the feeling of awe and wonder then I think it's not much. There are a lot of commercial portraiture's published daily, those heavily saturated photos with surreal looks, of models wearing sundresses in the outdoor, they are really good in their own sense, but if it not as daring a defying gravity with levitation, jump shots, or of models being shot underwater then they are just as good but without eliciting awe.

Rizal | Sunset at Mt Daraitan

RIZAL | Sunset at Mt Daraitan
The Far Corner of Taytay Rizal

The January wind is strong, it blew away any chance of cloud formation that would have made this moment more scenic. It was a long day, traveling to this far corner of Taytay Rizal after a graveyard shift, with the midday trekking under cover of Mt Daraitan's forest, I could not wish for a more pleasant way to cap this day than Sunset watching. Mt Daraitan's rocky summit proved to be a pleasant viewpoint to watch the Sunset as we feel the light rain and strong winds pass us by.

Benguet | Sunset At Kabayan Hills

Benguet | Sunset At Kabayan Hills
A Third In A Row, Return To Mt Timbac

I conclude that the most scenic of Sunsets are in the Highlands, people may disagree since the experience of watching the setting sun vary, and for the most part we remember them for the feeling it gives us. I'm romantic like that; I love to watch the shadows play as the sun is gradually going down in the horizon, the warm and cool colors are splayed together in one frame, the spherical shape of the sun turning dark yellow to reddish and could be framed by the passing clouds, but by being in the highlands like the Cordillera's, the pine laden hills can complete the ensemble.

Quezon | Pagbilao Grande Island's Kwebang Lampas

QUEZON | Pagbilao Grande Island's Kwebang Lampas
Kwebang Lampas Travel Guide

It had been months since the dry season (summer) in the Philippines passed for 2014. Yet, the finale beach camp trip I did with a few friends to Kwebang lampas of Pagbilao, Quezon still brings a vivid memory for me of a white sand beach cove. The towering Pagbilao Power Plant was an amalgamation amidst the rocky and green terrain, the scattered rain clouds of both days I was there, the sand that clings to my skin and the carefree banter of beach campers who are just too happy to be away from the bustle of Urban Manila; Kwebang Lampas was our refuge for this weekend. Even as light rains poured from time to time, telling us that this summer is soon over; as I lay alone inside my tent while people lounge by the beach side in drunken stupor; I could use a hug and a cuddle then, but I was never alone, not really.

Mountain | Mt Pulag Sunrise In The Rolling Hills

MOUNTAIN | Mt Pulag Sunrise In The Rolling Hills Part II
Mt Pulag Climb In Photos Part II

Everyone who climbs the slopes of Mt Pulag in Benguet hopes to witness the sunrise as it unfolds in the Summit. Said to be one of the most scenic spot for Sunrise viewing in the country due to Sea of Clouds Phenomena and being that Mt Pulag is the roof of Luzon. I got my share of the spectacle, and these are some of the photos leading up to this memorable experience.

Travel Photo | Hundred Islands National Park

TRAVEL PHOTO | Hundred Islands National Park
Lingayen Gulf, Alaminos City, Pangasinan

Scattered in the Lingayen Gulf of Pangasinan, some 123 to 124 Islands is the famous Hundred Islands National Park. I would say famous because I had first known about this National Park from my Grade School books as one of those Geological treasures turned into a Tourist attraction for everyone to enjoy. Lucap Wharf off the coast of Alaminos City is the jump off point, some 240 km North of Manila. The islands are dusty piles of Ancient Corals of an exposed Seabed, with peculiar mushroom-like shape due to erosion. There are only a number of Islands open for visiting Tourist mainly the Governor's Island, Marcos Island and the Children's Island. The park is also a location for the conservation of Giant Clams and its Terrestrial wildlife among the islands.

Travel Photo | Caramoan Peninsula

TRAVEL PHOTO | Caramoan Peninsula
Caramoan, Camarines Sur

Caramoan Peninsula is a place of scenic landscape, off its coast are a scattering of Islands and Islets with about 10 principal islands that are frequently visited by travelers and a site location for the reality TV Show Survivor. An approximately 12 hours of travel time from Manila by land, one could say "How far is it to paradise?" but paradise it is. The charms of Caramoan in the Bicol Region can easily compete with the landscape that we so concentiously compare with MIMAROPA Region. Just one visit for me and I realise that there is no need for me to look at other Asian countries for their travel destination gems, we have our own beautiful corner in here.

Travel Photo | Bolinao Rock Formation

TRAVEL PHOTO | Bolinao Rock Formation
Patar Beach, Bolinao, Pangasinan

One of the must see place along the long stretch of Patar Beach is its side of Rock Formations trust out into the breakwaters. An overflow of volcanic rock or lava from a long time ago volcanic erruption, evidence of Bolinao's violent past. All over Brgy Patar is a scattering of Volcanic rocks and underground caves, what makes the Bolinao Rock Formation special is that since it extends beyond the beach and serves as break water for the incoming waves of West Philippine Sea, it becomes a very good vantage point to look over the rugged landscape of Patar and its Golden Beach just above the eye level, a treat for landscape photographers and photo enthusiast.

Travel Photo | Kiltepan Viewpoint, Sagada

TRAVEL PHOTO | Kiltepan Viewpoint
Sagada, Mountain Province

Kiltepan Viewpoint is perhaps the most scenic place for sunrise viewing in Sagada as the Sea of Clouds at eye level hover a valley, littered with Pine Trees along rugged landscape of The Mountain Province, in the Philippine Cordillera's. On good weather conditions, you may find yourself standing in the viewpoint as you watch the romantic outburst of morning Sunlight and think about your special someone a "Wish You Were Here" card.

Mountain | Above The Clouds And Under The Stars

MOUNTAIN | Above The Clouds And Under The Stars

Return To Mt Timbac (Mt Singakalsa)

"You never climb the same mountain twice, not even in memory. Memory rebuilds the mountain, changes the weather, retells the jokes, remakes all the moves."
-- Lito Tejada-Flores

Above the sea of clouds and under the stars we were.

There was a moment when we all braved the cold and stepped outside just to watch the heavenly moon hover the night sky, like a midnight sun giving just enough illumination to the landscape. Its dark, the weather is cold, but we felt the warmth of inspiration creeping in our hearts, it was a site to behold, and so like paying homage to this beautiful place, we stood in silence as the bright moon revealed itself behind the passing clouds.

Pangasinan | Cape Bolinao Lighthouse

PANGASINAN | Cape Bolinao Lighthouse
Photos Of Bolinao Lighthouse

A tower placed on a vantage point of Bolinao Pangasinan. Known to be the 2nd tallest lighthouse in the Philippines.

In a broad daylight, with few drifting clouds, stepping into the threshold of this abandoned lighthouse was hot. Without a camera filter, my photos would have been glaringly exposed.
Bolinao Lighthouse is a noted destination to visit for every visitor of this lovely coastal town.

A Photo from the open gates. A little hike up, the lighthouse stoods proud on top of a hill.

Standing few meters at the foot of this massive tower.
Being in a close proximity, it is difficult to make the tower fit in my frame.

The tower is no longer in operation, as is, that the building beside this lighthouse is abandoned and dilapidated as well. A nice contrast to frame this beautiful lighthouse.

Sagada | Wild Flowers From Mountain Province

SAGADA | Wild Flowers From Mountain Province

I had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful town of Sagada, in the Mountain Province twice for two consecutive years. It has brought some of the most memorable travel adventures and experience, not only that, due to the cool climate, the photowalks along the rice terraces with scattering of wild flowers and small gardens lit up the environment, it is a place rich in Floras. So here I am sharing some of my prized set of Flora Photos taken while I was wandering the hills of Sagada.

This photo was taken during a tour of the Echo Valley, a place behind Sagada's Gothic church and local cemetery. This was among the treasure's of the Church garden.

Mountain | Sunset Photos While Climbing Mt Gulugod Baboy

MOUNTAIN | Sunset Photos While Climbing Mt Gulugod Baboy

The first mountain for me to climb, and glad I did one Saturday afternoon in the middle of February. I've read about just every niceties you can attribute to the lovely summit of Mt Gulugod Baboy, its sinuous landscape providing a 360 degree views of the surrounding terrain which is mostly bodies of water and rolling peaks of mountains, it also means that the place offers a beautiful view of the Sunset and Sunrise from opposite direction so it a perfect campsite to experience outdoors.

Bulacan | Wild Flowers Of Mt Manalmon

BULACAN | Wild Flowers Of Mt Manalmon

Mt Manalmon is a hill in San Miguel, Bulacan. A place of wonder for people who like the outdoors. Being that Bulacan is a province north of Metro Manila, this is an easy getaway especially for a weekend if you like to do a day hike exploration. Mt Manalmon though by standards is just a hill,  its terrain and the surrounding topography including scenic rivers and caves is a delightful soiree. As is for me, an amateur mountaineer, this place was a good place for the culminating activity of the Basic Mountaineering Course I attended with Sykes Outdoor. This was really more of an opportunity to travel that I grabbed, and more so that its a work sponsored activity, it was a treat to explore nature while spending less.

Doing nature treks like this gives mean opportunity to photography beautiful things while trekking, like taking photos of wild flowers along the trail. These blossoms were only a handful of the photos I took, taking photos in this manner allows me to appreciate these flowers without plucking them, and of course I didn't spend most of my time ogling behind the camera. Reminiscing the moment of seeing them is a far more better experience, especially those pink and white blossoms that look like cherry blossoms or like Sakura from Japan. Honestly, I haven't seen Cherry Blossoms up close, but if they look a lot like these then I am sure they are very beautiful.

This white blossoms were hiding in the shade, near the summit of Mt Manalmon. I was extra careful with taking some shots as there are wasp buzzing around the bush full of this flowers.

Pangasinan | Sunrise Photos From Lucap Wharf

PANGASINAN | Sunrise Photos From Lucap Wharf
Looking At Hundred Islands From Afar

While sunrise or sunset photos are a staple for photographers on the road, it's not exactly the sun that they are after. It's the dramatic change in colors and hues in the horizon during the break of dawn or setting sun. The sun projects a horizontal light which can sometimes be at eye level with the photographer, it does well in casting shadows, and bathing everything in sight in throes of different shades and colors. It's the time of the day when light is naturally saturated in colors.

While I mentioned that its not the sun that photographers are after. Composing a great Sunrise or Sunset photos are a challenge for composition. The first and obvious trick is for the photographer to realise that the sun is not the central focus here, it is merely the source of ambient light. Like many landscape photographs, finding a great foreground and subject also works here.

What is there to look out for when capturing the sun, is the rays that it cast. Shadows on cloudy horizon can make your pictures less boring or the sun's reflection over the water. The changing temperatures from cold to warm also works wonders even when you are shooting on the same spot, you'll get a different photograph altogether.

In ambient light, this photo looks cold. In different hues of blue and the boats shadows making up for a good foreground over the waters, with the horizon in shades of purple.

Capturing the sun's reflection in the water, is probably the only exception to the rule of thirds. This type of setting can allow you to put the horizon of the subject in the center while keeping the interest in the photo. In this photograph, I waited for that moment when the slow moving boat would make contact with sun's reflection in the water. To capture movement and direction, I decided on the last second to pan the photo a little to the right so as to capture the water ripples that the boat leaves behind.

Capturing silhouettes and shadows is another trick that can be done. Silhouttes give your photo that boost of drama. I have many jump shot photos where the subject is hidden in shadows. Placing the focus in front of the light source does the trick, you just have to look out for the shapes making sure that it is interesting.

A change in temperature can change a lot. See that the foreground in this photo is the same as the first photo, but this time the sun is already peeking in the horizon, casting warm light. As it does, the shadows intensified, making the corners of the photo darker but still capturing shadows.

Since I am using a kitlens, the maximum zoom in still allows the chance to capture distant movement. Though movement depends on the location itself, this photo shows the different hues in the sky, while the people on the boat cast a perfect shadow, the trails in the water provides a sense of direction.

Zambales | Golden Hour Photos From Zambales

ZAMBALES | Golden Hour Photos From Zambales

“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs.
When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.”  - Ansel Adams

Experiencing Golden hours when I travel is not very common. Some people may refer to it as Magic Hour describing the first or last hours on Sunrise or Sunset. But on my experience, there are certain situations that may differ a Magic hour from another, hence, I use colors to describe them.

Iloilo | Aerial Photos Of Panay Island

ILOILO | Aerial Photos Of Panay Island

When my Granddad passed away, I had to make immediate arrangements to fly home to be with my family in Mambusao Capiz. With all the many options for airlines offering affordable flights; Zest Air was the only one with cheapest offer at that time but that the flight is scheduled on a late afternoon. Then I was used to flying in broad daylight, so the trip was first time. Surprisingly Zest Air was very competent, there were only a few passengers on board and the cabin crews were all males instead of the common smiling female cabin crews. What's more unusual is that all throughout; the lights inside the cabin were turned off with only the headlights to be opened as an option. This draws the attention of all the few passengers to the cabin window facing the Sunset. I requested window seat luckily but that I didn't have my Camera then. Imagine having a vivid memory of particular moment in your life, and you only have words to describe, words that can fall on deaf ears if you have difficulty expressing yourself. So on that trip, a few years back, I only have but a selfie photo of myself in my arrival during the Golden Hour in Iloilo International Airport.

Shrouded in Clouds for the most part; here you can see the Tributaries and the sunlight hitting the ridges of the mountain peaks.

El Nido | Sunset Photos from El Nido

EL NIDO | Sunset Photos from El Nido

A trip to El Nido is always wrought with unforgettable memories. Though I've been there only twice, every corner and islands that I have seen and explored has an imprint of images in my mind. It's my setting for the perfect tropical paradise, no doubt knowing that it was an inspiration to a famous movie all beach lovers should know "The Beach".

These collections of sunset photos were taken on my last year’s trip to El Nido. Though I promised in my travel blog that I will post them, after editing most of the photos collected in my 5 day backpacking trip, I can't get myself to share most of it. For one thing, El Nido is a backpackers haven so I would expect that a lot of people would have far more amazing captures than I did, also it is personal, just looking at the photos I brought home makes me feel proud so maybe you could understand why I'm being selfish by checking the photos I'm sharing today.

One of the last photos I took for this memorable day. I've been watching and photographing this Sunset for an hour now, though I've seen the best when the sun was already below the horizon. But the final rays of yellow light didn't disappoint as it hit the cloud formations covering the entire town.
