Cagayan de Oro | White Water Rafting with Bugsay

CAGAYAN DE ORO | White Water Rafting with Bugsay
The World Class Water Rafting Adventure Of CDO

Paddle as if your life depends on it. An apt phrase for the foremost adventure of White Water Rafting that can be experienced in Cagayan de Oro. Though other places have already sprouted offering the same kind of thrill and adventure, Water Rafting in Cagayan de Oro remains to be the country's forefront in this kind of eco-tourism.

NOTE: These photos are from Bugsay, one of the few Water Rafting Tour group in CDO. We've paid for this photos as part of our souvenirs, and I enhance them using Picasa.

Before a wall of rock that is hidden in the shadows, we were struggling just to steer the boat forward.

Islas de Gigantes | Antonia Island

ISLAS DE GIGANTES | Antonia Island
Gigantes Group Of Islands In Photos Virtual Tour

Yet another Twin Beach to explore, adjacent to the bigger Gigante Sur Island. As per our guide, Antonia (An-to-ni-ya) Island is actually private, whose local ownership has been passed on from generation to generation. We paid entrance for Php 20.00 per head, though without any resort or large imposing edifice, there is a small house place just before the rocky hill and a little hut (kubo) for Sari-Sari store. Like the main islands of Gigante Norte and Gigante Sur, electricity is somewhat a challenge, but the Sari-Sari store sells all sorts of refreshments including beer to visitors as they are kept cool with ice. Yet another realization, as there were mounds of Scallops shells along the beach, this can be a perfect Island to camp.

Islas de Gigantes | Tangke Natural Pool

ISLAS DE GIGANTES | Tangke Natural Pool
Gigantes Group Of Islands In Photos Virtual Tour

A secluded area along the Southern end of Gigante Sur Island in jagged Karst Rock Wall, Tangke Natural pool is a must visit attraction in Isla de Gigantes if you prefer a serene location surrounded by towering rocks. Aptly named as Tangke which by Hiligaynon language a Tank that holds a body of water, water tank per say. Tangke is actually a Natural Saltwater Lagoon bounded on all sides by rocks, giving it the look of a nicely done pool.

Pangasinan | Of Giant Clams And Snorkeling

PANGASINAN | Of Giant Clams And Snorkeling
Underwater Adventure

I always like to share some of my underwater photos, but when it comes to marrying it with words then I would loose it. I'm thankful that even after a year, my amphibious Underwater Camera Lumix TS3 is still working. Out of carelessness and having subjected it to many elemental exposure, it still works for me.

Zambales | Surfing In Crystal Beach

ZAMBALES | Surfing In Crystal Beach
Surfing And Chilling

This would be a proud post but not yet a year ender of 2012. Proud that I am progressing much in learning to surf. On my count, this would be the 3rd time, though twice for this year that I went on the road to surf. A month prior to this unscheduled trip to Zambales, I went to Baler, Aurora simply to conquer its waves, and that's were this slow burning passion really kindled. Its easy to chase waves, knowing that it takes special conditions like the weather and time of the year, plus the location itself.

El Nido | Seven Commando Beach

EL NIDO | Seven Commando Beach
Philippines Best Beaches

One of the most unforgettable beach to hop in El Nido, Palawan. The Seven Commandos beach, is named after the Seven Commando's (lost soldiers) who lived here. Beautiful spot for snorkeling and by just being in the corner from El Nido town. Kind of hard to imagine that by approach, Seven Commando Beach is just like many other secluded island beaches in the area, but it is part of the main town, make no mistakes though as one can't just take simple hike to get here. That karst rock wall is as intimidating and sharp as it looks.

Cebu | Discovering Malapascua Island

CEBU | Discovering Malapascua Island
Underwater Adventure

Cebu is a wonderful place, as such that it is also near to some of the most charming islands I have ever visited. It's not a secret that when I travel to some of the best known destination in the Philippines, I seek the one's with beautiful beaches, and those with opportunity for snorkeling adventure. I'm such a sucker for underwater fun ever since I learned to snorkel without wearing vest or flippers. That feeling of buoyancy while in water, the freedom to move freely without inhibitions, that moment when I hold my breath and dive down to get a closer look at some of the best coral reefs that we are proud of, these are just some of the junks I seek out. Bringing my own snorkeling gear, and the investment I made with an underwater camera over 6 months ago, I have become a witness to how pristine and fragile is our own backyard of underwater world.

Signing up for snorkeling activity while in Malapascua Island is a good past time other than lounging in it's sandy white sand beaches and watching lots of foreign back packers enjoy this laid back beach. I can't compare it to any other locations, it has a charm more on its own, I'm just taken aback by the realization that more foreign tourist would have known the historic island of Malapascua than the local one's like myself. The snorkeling activity is about 3 hours, hopping on 3 locations surrounding the island. At the end, you'd have made a full circle tour of the place with the finale at a place they call Marine Sanctuary. A sanctuary that is, about 20 feet deep and laden with some of the riches and most diverse coral gardens I've ever seen.

These shots here are a lot more closer to shore, as the white sand creates a startling contrast against the colorful marine life. Snorkeling here is a standard rate of Php 1,500 as I am with 2 other friends, that makes it 500 for each of us. However, I got a discount of Php 150 because I'm using my own snorkeling gear. As part of the fees, the boatman rents the gear for the same amount. So if you have the intention of visiting Malapascua island off the coast of Cebu, better bring your own gear, saves you money and more so about the hygiene, one can't tell about who was that last person who had used that gear.

This photo above is shot in the final location, the Marine Sanctuary. It proved to be challenge for me, as Habagat is raging all across the Philippines, here I was, braving strong currents to enjoy this beautiful site.

I have heard of Malapascua, aside from fellow travel bloggers who had been here, but more to the publicity it garnered being synonymous to divers as haven for Thresher sharks.

It's best to visit the island, when you are with many friends tangling along. As is, the fee I paid for the snorkeling is already overpriced at Php 350 considering that we've only visited 3 sites.

More of discovering Malapascua in my upcoming post, How to get there, What to do and the accommodations. Remember that you don't have to spend much in here, the island is a back packers haven, very friendly to a Pinoy working class like myself.

El Nido | Secret Beach

EL NIDO | Secret Beach
A Karst Rock Wall And A Different World Beyond It

The Secret Beach, having a curious name for a place in Matinloc Island, El Nido, a secluded location that's best understood when visited. In this case, not just seen but experience. Surely, this is a curious place, the entrance alone is a challenge, I can't reconcile the fact that this was the inspiration for a scene in the movie of Alex Garland "The Beach" where Leonardo Di Caprio with the girl takes a dive in a beach during a moonlit night only to come up to another beach full of glowing Bioluminescence. The Secret Beach lives up to the idea, but its much more raw, the danger more real, the challenge more life threatening. More so that when I tried this trip, it was raining hard in El Nido, I'd never seen a place more beautiful and unforgiving under rain cover.

Coron Underwater Part III | Barracuda Lake

CORON UNDERWATER | Barracuda Lake
Part III Underwater Adventure

Swimming in Barracuda lake is a surreal experience. The lake itself was named after the Barracuda's that lives in its depth, though these wonderful creatures often shy away from human contact. Barracuda lake itself is a famous sinkhole because it located on top of a volcanic crater, it is famous as a dive spot because at different water levels, the waters change. The top most layer is fresh water, while the middle part is like a hot spring, bottom lake floor is seawater, its an amazing phenomena that makes Barracuda Lake a keeper for divers.

Coron | Underwater Part II - Kayangan Lake

CORON UNDERWATER | Kayangan Lake
Part II Underwater Adventure

Coron Island is famous for its many lakes, most of it is sacred to the Tagbanua's which takes pride as having Coron as their ancestral domain. Being that most of its lake is sacred, there are only a few lakes that are open to the public. I bet, if one is to immerse in the culture of the Tagbanua's, they can open a lot of off beaten paths in Coron.

Coron | Underwater Part I - Siete Picados

CORON UNDERWATER | Siete Picados
Part 1 Underwater Adventure

Armed with Lumix TS3 Underwater Camera brought just 2 days prior to my trip. I still have that natural high of a kid having a new toy to play with. It did make a dent to my budget, but I was willing to make it an investment, I've saved up for it anyway and what's the use of trying to become a budget traveler without understand a few sacrifice along the road. All for the adventure.

Caramoan | Left Alone In Cagbalinad Island

CARAMOAN | Cagbalinad Island
Left Alone In A Limestone Island

Cagbalinad is a small secluded island facing the expensive resort laden Gota Island of Caramoan. This is our second stop for first day island hopping adventure, already my skin is starting to burn but when I'm in a tropical paradise such as this, I can't miss the chance. Our guide Kuya Ramil left us for a good 30 minutes as he was went back to Paniman to get his handmade goggles. We are to have some snorkeling adventure on some deeper waters just few meters away from Lahus Island. He must have realized that I'm very comfortable in the water, I even brought my own snorkeling gear. My next post will be about how he assisted me like a father to a son while snorkeling.

Camiguin | Sunken Cemetery

CAMIGUIN | Sunken Cemetery
A History of Geological Violence

Now this little place in here is a keeper. Famous for what it is called. A cemetery was buried underwater following the eruption of one of Camiguin's active Volcano. They can still be viewed by snorkeling, which I didn't do. The big cross is more like a landmark of the place, a nice piece considering that a lot of folks come here and take pictures, judging by its location, this place provide a spectacular view of the sunset if the time is perfect, unfortunately for me, I was here on a lunch time on a cloudy day. I took lunch by the restaurant here as recommended by our guide Kuya Jojo. We selected what we want to eat, and they'll prepare it while we ride a ferry to inspect the big cross as seen below.

Camiguin | White Island

CAMIGUIN | White Island
A Sandbar Haven Facing The Island Born Of Fire

Lucky for me, I got my chance to frolic in Camiguin's white Island on a good weather. It's was too hot, this stretch of white island sandbar is expose to elements especially the sun, and even though we only stayed here for at least an hour, I was sun baked when I got back to the main land and had the extra salt rinsed off my skin.

Zambales Weekend Getaway

Zambales, A Weekend Respite

Specifically, San Felipe has become a weekend respite for me for the last 3 years.
Much like Puerto Galera, when friends decide to leave the big city for a weekend to frolic in the Sun.
I guess people would relate to this if you work in Metro Manila where things can be cluttered.

I took this picture early in the morning before sunrise on the unfinished marina by the beach.
It had been raining hard the day before so I wasn't expecting a good sunrise.
I was just inspecting the Marina and the colorful graffiti,
when the sunlight poked through the crevices, it was a startling contrast with the drawings.

Liw-Liwa, San Felipe, Zambales | Surfing Newbie Adventure

ZAMBALES | Surfing Zambales

It's surfing season.. Before it doesn't mean much to me but it does now that I've tried it. Did I tell before that I am such a water whore.. I'm always at home with water. Reason why most places that I like to go with must have  or least a chance for me to swim or snorkel. I can't count the many times I almost drowned as a kid, because I kept on trying to learn to swim on my own.. Not in a swimming pool mind you, but on a fresh water river in my Mom's hometown, Mambusao Capiz.

Liw-Liwa is a sitio in San Felipe, Zambales. San Felipe was practically a coastline I've been coming here for the last 3 years.. Every time I want to enjoy a weekend by the beach I have a friend who's got a beach house here.. In all my time, I never knew that the place was good for surfing. Well, It was probably off season when I went here the last time which was April 2011.

Trying to surf as a newbie was challenging for me. My body doesn't have that balanced symmetry.. I made up for it for stamina though.

It's really fun, It's no wonder why a lot of people is addicted to this. I've always been right handed, so I was being being cocky with my guide, saying that I'm probably a regular surfer.. I can't even stand on the board.. shame! But when I tried goofy, that's when my guide concluded that I'm goofy.

How did I do for starters? Not bad, but if I compare myself to my friends.. I'm way behind, there's only a handful of first timers like me that day. A little more practice would do me good.

My friend Chuchi! Who could tell that this girl is a team manager in our office. It's just her 2nd time to try surfing, but here she looks like a pro.
